Built in 1980 the Sun Centre was not specifically designed with good Access for all as a high consideration. Much work has been undertaken over the years to encourage and facilitate use by all and the following gives an assessment of the present position.
The Sun Centre is on the promenade of Rhyl – the Sea front on the east side (Prestatyn side). There are several Car parks around the Sun Centre but the car parks to the East of the facility are specific for the Sun Centre with an accessible car park directly adjacent to the Sun Centre and adjoining Theatre. Both Stairs and ramp are available to access the facility from the car park. There is a large drop off station adjacent to the ramp/stairs from the car park. Local bus routes have bus stops directly outside the Sun Centre.
The Sun Centre and the Theatre share the main doors and these are fully automatic retracting items. The pay desks at the sun Centre are turnstile types common to this age of building. Of the three pay desks, one or two are normally in operation. The third one has a wide entrance and no turnstile and a low counter. This is suitable for wheel chairs and for large group bookings.
As has been mentioned above, the original design of the building did not consider good access for all and thus the main changing rooms are below ground accessible only by stairs. There are two Accessible changing rooms in the Sun Centre, but at present only one is fitted with a shower. The one with a shower is near the entrance the second at the other side of the building near the ramp to the pool.
The facility uses step to link different areas, though all sides of the building can be accessed from a single floor, steps only being required to access the water. The exception being the main lagoon pool and one of the children’s pools which can be accessed via a ramp.
The pools are access via steps from all directions. Steps have high visibility markings on all edges. The main lagoon pool has a ramp access from the far side of the building near the second changing room. A water compatible wheel chair is available for pool entrance via the ramp.
The facility has a number of attractions such as slides and Monorail ( a gondola that takes visitors around the building at ceiling height.) None of these attractions are suitable for wheelchairs. Visually impaired visitors can use the Slides and our Staff are trained as welcome hosts and are happy to assist visitors in their use.
There are two accessible toilets, one in each accessible changing room
